I think therefore we are.

Cogito Ergo Sumus

This Ego,
this Self
we seem to be
—who is he?

Why is he here,
now, a window
into reality
so often unsatisfied?

He lives in us,
an evolved process
that grasps
endlessly for

more
from
all
this.

He urges us
to make sure
we get ours.
However,

his expectations
are always adjusted
to just beyond
what we just accomplished.

His aspirations
always end
in disaster
from his perspective.

The search
for wholeness
is never
ending.

He doesn’t know
what
enough
is.

But still
we live
with him
so we might as well

thank him
for doing
what
he must,

appreciate
the stubborn way
he keeps the yearning
burning,

while slowly coming
to an understanding
that he will die
no matter what.

But this
far bigger I,
the we who know
we don’t know,

we will never die.
